India Automotive HMI Market

Indian Automotive Human-Machine Interface Market to Register 14.1% CAGR during 2018–2023

Owing to the growing number of road accidents across the globe, including India, the demand for features which can enhance the safety and security features of vehicles is growing day by day. Attributed to this, automobile manufacturers are increasingly trying to develop new technologies in order to enhance the driving experience. These factors have led to the increasing penetration of connected and autonomous vehicles. Other than this, consumer are also creating requirement for in-vehicle digital systems and predictive maintenance, which is why vehicles are increasingly being converted into smart machines that are able to connect the driver with the outside world.

In order to achieve this sort of flexibility in autonomous and connected cars, vehicles need to be integrated with innovative automotive human-machine interfaces (HMI). Almost all modern vehicles are now equipped with different kinds of HMI technologies. These solutions are integrated in vehicles to assist drivers in controlling infotainment and connectivity solutions. Owing to all these factors, the Indian automotive HMI market is predicted to generate a revenue of $1 billion by 2023, rising from $466.9 million in 2017, progressing at a 14.1% CAGR during the forecast period (2018–2023).

Different automotive HMI products are multifunctional switches, instrument cluster, rear seat entertainment, head-up display, touch screen display, and steering mounted controls. Among all these, the demand for touch screen display is predicted to be the highest in the years to come, as these systems are widely being adopted in medium category cars. Acoustic, visual, and mechanical are the major interfaces of HMI, out of which, the demand for visual interface has been the highest up till now. Visual interfaces are increasingly be utilized in medium cars. Two major HMI access are standard and multimode, between which, the demand for standard HMI access was higher in the past.

This is majorly due to the lower cost of these HMIs as compared to multimodal HMI access. This being said, the demand for multimode HMI access is expected to increase significantly in the near future, which is because of growing requirement for comfort and premium features in passenger cars. Multimodal HMIs further offer benefits such a faster interaction and enhanced recognition, which is also predicted to result in their rising demand in the near future in India. Major end-users of automotive HMIs are premium cars, economy cars, and medium cars.

The demand for different HMI products in the past was higher for medium vehicles in the country; however, the adoption of these products is projected to increase substantially in premium cars in the near future. This can be attributed to the growing sales of these vehicles in India on account of increasing disposable income of people. Geographically, the western region made the largest contribution to the Indian automotive HMI market. This is primarily owing to the rising sales of premium and medium cars in this part of the country.
