Rare Earth Metals Market

What Makes Rare Earth Metals So Special?

Formed by supernovae, ‘rare earth metals’ are a group of 15 metallic elements in the periodic table. They have a range of exclusive, optical, magnetic and catalytic properties making them highly valued in modern economy. From quantum computing and medical uses to industrial procedures and green technology, they play an important role in life and will grow increasingly significant in the future.

Rare Earths are not Rare at All

Despite their name, rare earth metals aren’t rare. Cerium is 25th most abundant element, making it as abundant as copper. Lanthanum and Neodymium are the next in the list; all the three metals are abundant than lead. Despite being plentiful in the earth’s crust, these metals are distributed all around the globe, so it is hard finding lot in one place.

Rare Earth Metals are Superior Magnets

Neodymium magnets are the strongest permanent magnets, allowing high tech gadgets to become cheaper, smaller and lighter while upholding best pull strength. Their greater magnetic superiority has permitted designers to advance the competence of multiple technologies like electric and hybrid vehicles, mobiles, computers, televisions, wind turbines, aircraft controls, loudspeakers, robots, and factory automation apparatus.

Rare Earth Metals Helped Create Color TV

For a number of years, the rare earth elements europium and yttrium were put to use as phosphors to help see the color red on tube televisions. Mixes of gadolinium and terbium were used for creating yellow-green phosphors. Mixing small amount of these rare earth elements into the compound helped to emphasize the color on the screen, giving it an intense quality that was pretty to the eye.

Rare Earth Metals are Fluorescent Crime Fighters

Possibly one of the strangest uses of rare earth metals is in the crime fighting technologies like anti-counterfeiting. The compounds europium, dysprosium and terbium are fluorescent under UV light, making them extremely useful in the anti-counterfeiting sector. When little amounts of these rare earth metals are mixed into products, it is easy to recognize counterfeit products when illumined under an UV light.
